TWO EXTREMES
School is broken. We know this.
But where do we go from here?
As a switched on home educator, you would know that there are literally dozens of different education philosophies that you can choose from - and practically infinite different combinations as you consider the unique characteristics of your child,
your family dynamics, your current goals and circumstances.
The choice is overwhelming. Therein lies the dilemma.
All of these different approaches lies somewhere on a continuum
between balancing freedom of choice versus a structured framework.
UNSCHOOLING
TRADITIONAL
At one extreme you have Unschooling, which puts 100% trust in the child's innate desire and ability to learn in their own time and in their own way.
And at the other end you have the highly structured Traditional/Classic approach, with
books, desks, and other very familiar hallmarks of what most people know of 'education'.
At one end, there's whole lot of freedom - the obvious advantage is that kids align their learning experiences with their interests and therefore stay highly motivated and engaged.
The disadvantage is that level of freedom can lead to a lot of aimless wandering, a bunch of unfinished ideas and reduced levels of 'grit' and resilience (because some challenge is necessary to build mental toughness)
At the other end, you have the advantage of guidance and structure to maximise focus and productivity. The disadvantage being, that without ownership, there is little responsibility or investment in the experience. It becomes teacher centred and teacher driven, and little real learning takes place.

In a NASA longitudinal study, 98% of kindergarten students scored at 'genius level' for creativity.
5 years later, only 30% of those same students scored at the same level, and again, five years later, only 12 percent.
When the same test was administered to adults, it was found that only two percent scored at this level.
According to the study, our creativity is drained by traditional education.*
This is a big problem.
Because most experts now agree that creativity is one of the fundamental learning skills that students will need as they enter the dynamic workforce of the 21st century.*
Also, young people are in desperate need of joy, hope and a way to enhance their mental fitness.
Recent statistics show that almost 40% of young people have experienced a mental health condition within the last 12 months. It is a silent pandemic among our youth that is killing hundreds and handicapping thousands every year*
